What Small Businesses Can Learn From 628,969 Social Media Ad Campaigns

Every year, a few reports land that everyone in social media reads. Metricool's Social Ads Report 2026 is one of them.

It analysed 628,969 Meta and TikTok ad campaigns from 44,355 advertisers, with more than $471 million in ad spend, comparing January to June 2025 with the same period in 2026. It also picked out brands whose public ads show what works.

We've read it cover to cover so you don't have to. Here are the lessons that matter for small businesses, and how we'd put them into practice.

Lesson 1: one product, one ad

Scrapbook.com, a US crafts store, runs about 52 ads at once, close to one for every product. Goose Island, a UK fashion label, does the same with around 50 active ads, each with its own photo and its own "Shop Now".

What to steal: if you sell several products or services, don't push one generic ad. Give your most popular ones their own post and their own call to action. The same works for your organic content.

Lesson 2: test everything

Tuff Shed, a US building manufacturer, runs one creative in roughly 47 near-identical versions at the same time, with about 200 active ads in total. Big advertisers don't bet on one idea and hope. They test and let the results pick the winner.

What to steal: try two or three versions of your next post or ad: a different first line, a different photo, a different offer. Keep what works.

Lesson 3: keep your winners running

Druni, a Spanish beauty retailer, has ads that have been live since January 2025 running alongside brand-new ones. Gameology, an Australian board-game shop, does the same.

What to steal: when a post or ad works, don't retire it after a week. Reshare your best content, update it and keep it working for you.

Lesson 4: TikTok is cheaper for getting seen

Across most of the funnel, TikTok delivered for less in 2026:

  • Reach: TikTok's cost per thousand impressions was 22% lower than Meta's.

  • Website clicks: Meta cost 147% more per click than TikTok.

  • Leads: an average of $2.69 per lead on TikTok, compared with $6.00 on Meta.

Meta's clear advantage was engagement, where it earned more interactions for every dollar.

What to steal: don't ignore TikTok if your customers are there, especially if you want to reach new people. But Meta is still where most businesses advertise: 91% of accounts ran paid social on Meta alone.

Lesson 5: spending more doesn't fix a weak strategy

Meta sales campaigns returned $4.57 for every $1 spent in 2026, down from $5.48 in 2025. And the biggest-spending accounts had the lowest return of any group.

What to steal: before you increase your budget, improve your content, your offer and your page. That's where small businesses can outsmart the big players.

Lesson 6: know what each campaign is for

On Meta, around two-thirds of campaigns aimed at traffic or engagement, but over 70% of the money went to campaigns aimed at leads and sales. In other words, brands spend most where the sale happens.

What to steal: be clear about what each post or ad is for. Getting seen, building interest and getting the sale are different jobs, and they need different content.

The Tartan Social take

After 8 years in social media, this report confirms what we see every day with our clients. The businesses that win aren't the ones with the biggest budgets. They're the ones that post consistently, test what works and double down on it.

Frequently asked questions

Should small businesses run social media ads?

Yes, once your page and content are working well. Ads amplify what's already there.

Is TikTok or Meta better for ads?

It depends on your goal and your customers. In Metricool's 2026 data, TikTok was cheaper for reach, clicks and leads, while Meta was stronger for engagement.

How many ads should I run at once?

Even on a small budget, testing two or three versions is far better than relying on one.
