How to Rebuild Your Confidence in Business After a Setback
Every business owner has a moment when the ground shifts. A big client leaves. A launch flops. Life gets in the way and the business takes the hit.
I've been there. In the past year I had an accident that forced me to stop working, I lost clients and I had to rebuild in a new country. And the hardest part wasn't the lost income. It was the voice in my head asking whether I was still any good.
Here's what I've learned about getting your confidence back, and your business moving again.

A hard year is not the same as being a failure
This is the one I needed to hear most. When things go wrong, it's easy to confuse "this has been difficult" with "I'm not good at this". They are not the same thing.
Your skills didn't disappear because life got hard. Your experience didn't disappear. Everything you built before the difficult bit still counts.
7 ways to rebuild your confidence in business
1. Write down your evidence
Make a list of everything you've achieved: awards, happy clients, results, kind messages. When your brain tells you you're rubbish, you'll have the receipts. I literally unpacked my business awards and put them on the shelf. It helped more than I expected.
2. Go back to what you know works
A setback is not the time to reinvent everything. Look at what has brought in customers before and do more of that first.
3. Set tiny, winnable goals
Not "get 10 new clients this month". Try "send 3 messages to past clients this week". Small wins rebuild momentum faster than big goals.
4. Talk to your past customers
People who've worked with you already trust you. A friendly check-in often turns into a referral, a review or new work.
5. Get visible again
When confidence dips, most of us go quiet. It's the worst thing we can do. Post, even imperfectly. If that feels hard, read our guide on how to stop overthinking your social media.
6. Stop moving the goalposts
Overachievers are brilliant at this. Win an award, and it's "could have done more". Survive a ridiculous year, and it's "why am I not further ahead?" Celebrate the wins as they happen.
7. Get support
A coach, a mentor, a business friend or a good community. You don't have to figure it all out on your own.
If imposter syndrome is part of it
It usually is. Feeling like a fraud after a knock is incredibly common, especially for women in business. We wrote about it in imposter syndrome: business edition.
What I'd tell you if we were having a coffee
You haven't suddenly become rubbish because life got hard. Put the awards back up. Be proud of what you've built. Then get back to work, one small step at a time.
New era. Same you. Much better perspective.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my business back on track after losing clients?
Start with the people who already know you: past clients, your network and your existing followers. Then get visible again with consistent, helpful content.
How long does it take to rebuild confidence?
There's no set timeline. Small, consistent actions matter more than waiting until you "feel ready".
Should I change my whole business after a setback?
Not straight away. Give yourself time to separate what's actually broken from what just feels hard right now.
Need a hand getting visible again?
If getting back out there feels like too much right now, we can take social media off your plate. Tartan Social's done-for-you packages start from £399.
